A must have!

This is a fantastic resource for anybody who's thinking about getting a tattoo. In fact, I would go so far as to say that you shouldn't get a tattoo without reading this book. You can look up tattoo symbols by name, by type, or just thumb through the whole thing looking at all the fantastic illustrations. I bought the book when I decided the time had come to take the tattoo plunge, but realized I had no idea what design I would want or would look good. This book helped me choose a design I would never have thought of by myself. Even if you're not considering a tattoo yourself, the entries make for fascinating reading. Every tattoo shop should have one of these! I'm waiting for the sequel on jewelry!
Bang for the Buck

I first saw this book at a tattoo shop. I started looking up all my tattoos and found that I was actually right about most of them! I bought one and haven't been able to put it down. If you're looking for some big bang for your buck, you can not go wrong here! Since I had already seen a copy, I knew exactly what I was getting. There's about one drawing for every 3 or 4 entries. The entries are short but enough to let you know if you should be getting that tat or not.
Fantastic Resource

This book puts a lot of information together in one place and is something that anybody who wants a tattoo would want to have. Lots of images and tons of different symbols make this a real reference book. You can find classic tattoo symbols like the Crawling Panther but it also has stuff like Om and lots of variations on a theme (different kinds of crosses, animals, etc.). It gets you thinking about all the different tattoos that there are to choose from. I also just enjoyed reading the various facts from all over the world. I bought this book together with "Ink" and they make a nice pair.

This book has it all! If you want to get a tattoo that everybody else in the world doesn't already have, read through it. I'm using it to design my own.

I've been tattooing for over 20 years...not a novice at this business of tattoos! Found this book at our library and rushed to buy my own for the shop. This book is fascinating and informative. Nice, concise and fun!! I highly recommend shop owners get a copy to have around when those know-it-all's come in with their off the wall 'new' ideas.

Bought it used but even at full price it's great!!

One reviewer complained it didn't give info on how-to....hey, get an apprenticeship folks and DO IT RIGHT. A doctor doesn't learn brain surgery by buying a scapel and practicing on his friends, huh?? This business can kill you if you're uneducated.
(and nice job, Greg, the illustrations are fun!!)

Why Decide On A Celtic Tattoo?

Tattoo Designs | Comments (0) admin @ 12:41 pm

Celtic tattoos have survived the millenniums as a symbol of pride and tradition. Since the first Romans saw that tattoos adorned on the body of dead Celtic warriors, there has been a fascination about the tattoos and how the body art both inspired the warriors into battle and how they made the connection between tribe and clan. Today Celtic tattoos have regained their popularity and have hit the tattoo world like a hurricane. People are clamoring to have the Celtic tattoo to be apart of their body are collection and seemingly want to know the connection to the honor and loyalty of a civilization past.

When picking out a Celtic tattoo there are many designs in which to choose from. You have to consider the area of body you want to place the tattoo in order to make it more appealing to the eye of the beholder. The length and width of the tattoo should show some symmetry to the body area where you wish to apply the art. For example a woman with skinny ankles would not want the person looking at her to be attracted to her flaw. Instead she might decide to put the tattoo around her calve in order to draw attention to a body part more pleasant. Other reasons to choose the tattoo to fit your body part are the intricacy of the design. A very intricate design takes a steady hand for the tattoo artist and a proper canvas, your body, to get the job done right.

Is A Tribal Tattoo Right For You

Tattoo Designs | Comments (0) admin @ 6:27 am

No matter what corner of the world you visit or what culture or history you examine you will run across some reference to tattooing or body art. From the cold blistery shores of Ireland where the Celtics defended themselves against the Romans to the Islands of Sumatra where cannibalistic tribes roamed the islands, tribal tattoos have been in existence for a long time. The reemergence of tribal tattoos has become a popular venue for tattoo enthusiasts and tattoo shops across the United States and around the world. Even celebrities are embracing tribal tattoos. Why are tribal tattoos back in popularity and why should you as a tattoo consumer want to get one?

Tribal tattoos have been apart of the cultural heritage of many people from different times. Sometimes adorned to put fear in an enemy’s heart and sometimes used as a story board, tribal tattoos had a message and a meaning for both the wearer and the beholder. For example ancient tribes in Samoa wore intricate tattoos that covered most of their bodies. This was not for some warrior attribute but to show respect for the gods that governed their world. The Samoan’s tribal tattoo would tell stories of honor and courage to appease their gods and let them know that they were held in the highest respect.

This unique book by tattoo artist Takahiro Kitamura (Horitaka, a pupil of Horiyoshi III) discusses the art of the Japanese tattoo in the context of Ukiyo-e, concentrating on the parallel histories of the woodblock print and the tattoo. Through high quality illustrations it shows that the Japanese tattoo is highly reliant on and linked to the woodblock print and that it deserves a position among the other art forms. A range of typical ukiyo-e motifs in the Japanese tattoo are discussed and illustrated by the original Japanese prints, and sketches, drawings and tattoos by tattoo master Horiyoshi III. The book ends with a special essay by Don Ed Hardy.
